I'm a big fan of Girls' Last Tour so I wanted to watch something similar. Then I discovered Haibane Renmei and without knowing anything about it I started watching.
Haibane Renmei is a mystery/fantasy anime from the early 2000's, about a girl named Rakka being reborn (this is not some kind of isekai slop) as a Haibane (a kind of angel) in another world where she has to live with other Haibane in a small house called Old Home outside of the main the town called Grie, both of which locked behind a indestructible wall that no one can cross except some mysterious people known as Toga.
Haibane Renmei feels like an old memory, something you watched as a child and only have a few bits of memory left of. But it was phenomenal, going in with no expectations and getting a straight 10/10. Storytelling, characters and the art style are all "perfect".
Watching media where you have no idea about what's actually going to happen is a really good thing in my opinion. Like zero knowledge about it. It can either be trash and completely miss your taste or it could serve you a 3 Michelin star meal, that you will never forget. Haibane Renmei, Angels Egg and Code Geass are a few examples of anime about which I didn't know anything, but they still all went on my list of all time favourites.
Back to Haibane Renmei, my favourite character would probably be either Rakka or Reki. Rakka (the main character) reminds me of myself, she's trying to fit into the world of Grie, trying to fit into a weird world where everyone seems to know something she doesn't. Reki is just really cool and she also paints too.
If you like Girls' Last Tour, Serial Experiments Lain or generally something a bit sad and tragic, then I would highly recommend you go check out Haibane Renmei.
This was my first "long" review about anything really, so it's really messy and chaotic.
